About University of Sydney

The University of Sydney, founded in 1850, is Australia's first university and is regarded as one of its most prestigious. It was ranked in the top 100 universities in the world and is amongst the top four in the country. The University was founded in 1850 as an institution to suit the needs of New South Wales. It was the first university in the world to admit male students only purely on the basis of academic merits. However, during the 1880s, they began admitting women as well, on the same basis as men. The University's scholars and students share a passionate commitment to the transformative power of education. Research at the University of Sydney makes a real difference to understanding today's world and how we work and live in it. The community is also enriched by bringing together people from all social and cultural backgrounds.

University of Sydney students and researchers come from all over the world and all backgrounds to prepare for a life of challenge and change. The University is unique among Australia's leading universities in the breadth of disciplines offered, providing wide opportunities for personal development and cross-disciplinary study that delivers unique insights and breakthroughs. Sydney is a member of Australia's Group of Eight, Academic Consortium 21, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Worldwide Universities Network. The University is also colloquially known as one of Australia's sandstone universities.
