About Deep Springs College

Founded in 1917, Deep Springs College is a unique institution of higher learning. The educational program is built upon three pillars: academics, self-government, and manual labor. The school is located 40 miles from Bishop, California on an isolated cattle ranch in Deep Springs Valley.

Campus information

Deep Springs College is an accredited two-year full-scholarship liberal arts college with between 24 and 30 students, located on a cattle-ranch and alfalfa farm in the high desert of eastern California. The school, founded by L.L. Nunn in 1917 on the three pillars of labor, self-governance, and academics, aims to prepare its students for lives of service to humanity.

Deep Springs’ campus is located in the high desert of eastern California. Our 155-acre ranch is the only habitation in Deep Springs Valley, between the White and Inyo Mountain ranges. The nearest large town, Bishop, California, is 40 miles away. The physical isolation and natural beauty of our location are integral parts of the educational program. Students make frequent trips to the Sierra Nevada, Death Valley National Park, the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, and many other nearby wildernesses.
