Malaysia-China academic partnership lays the foundation for next-gen global tech leaders.
In a major step for cross-border education and tech talent development, Malaysia’s Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) and China’s Guilin University of Technology (GUT) have launched the GUT-APU College of Information Technology (GACIT) in Guangxi, China.
Set against Guilin’s scenic backdrop, the launch event brought together leaders from both institutions, regional education authorities, and the Malaysian Embassy in China.
The new college reflects a shared goal: to nurture future-ready graduates with strong technical expertise and global perspectives.
Why This Collaboration Matters
Here’s what makes the GUT-APU College of Information Technology (GACIT) a standout opportunity for aspiring tech professionals:
- You get two degrees from two respected tech universities
- Study in China’s innovation zone while learning from Malaysian experts
- Courses blend theory with real-world industry projects
- Learn from APU lecturers who will fly to Guilin to co-teach with GUT faculty
- Join a culturally diverse campus with ASEAN and Chinese students
This transnational education model is perfect for students aiming to stand out in the tech job market, especially across ASEAN, China, and beyond.
A Transnational Tech Hub with Dual Degrees
The GACIT initiative draws on the strengths of both universities. GUT, a major Chinese institution with over 19,000 students, and APU, one of Malaysia’s leading digital tech universities.
GACIT will offer specialised programmes in Software Engineering, Computer Science, and Network Engineering, with students graduating with two degrees: a Bachelor of Engineering from GUT and a Bachelor of Science from APU.
This dual-degree format enhances global employability and provides students with a rich academic experience.
A key element of the partnership is the mobility of faculty, with APU’s School of Computing and School of Technology staff flying to Guilin to co-deliver and co-develop courses alongside GUT lecturers.
Strengthening ASEAN–China Education Ties
Mr Muhammad Sallehuddin Mohd Dilif, Education Counsellor at the Malaysian Embassy in China, praised the initiative:
He also highlighted Malaysia’s role as 2025 ASEAN Chair, adding that GACIT could evolve into a hub for ASEAN-China student engagement and tech innovation.
The event was attended by Mr Wang Dunqui, President of GUT and Dean at GACIT; Mr Nong Yi, Secretary of the Communist Party Committee at GUT; and Ms Lv Qing, from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region’s Department of Education—signalling strong institutional and regional support for the venture.
Shared Leadership, Shared Vision
To lead the college, APU’s Associate Professor Dr Thang Ka Fei (Senior Head, School of Technology) has been appointed Deputy Dean at GACIT, alongside Associate Professor Ts Dr Tan Chin Ike (Head, School of Computing).
They will drive programme implementation, academic delivery, and strategic growth.
During the visit, APU representatives also explored GUT’s state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and Geological Museum, both symbols of GUT’s ongoing research excellence.
Why Study Tech in Guilin?
Aside from the Instagram-worthy scenery (seriously — Guilin is stunning), the city is rising fast as part of the ASEAN Free Trade innovation zone. That means more tech investment, job opportunities, and exposure to regional markets.
With a curriculum rooted in industry demand and a learning environment shaped by two digital-first institutions, students at GACIT will gain access to cross-border research, real-world projects, and international networking opportunities.
More Than a Milestone
As GACIT opens its doors to its first batch of students, the partnership between APU and GUT stands as a model for future transnational education. It’s a powerful example of how universities can collaborate across borders to nurture tech talent, strengthen educational diplomacy, and prepare students for a rapidly changing world.
