About Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia was established in 1904 as a technical school. It wasn't until 1941 that the institute's status of "college" was obtained and established UTM as a technical college. The college was built in Jalan Semarak, Kuala Lumpur. In the early years the college offered engineering courses at diploma level. In 1960, the university upgraded its courses to the degree level. 

On 1 April 1975, the institution became a university and changed their name to University Teknologi Malaysia. Subsequently, UTM moved to a new campus in Johor Bahru. The works began in 1978 and finished on September 1985. 

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is now a research ugraduate-focused driven by innovation. Situated both in Kuala Lumpur, and Johor Bahru, the southern city in Iskandar Malaysia. The first campus is 38 hectares and the second campus is built on a 1148 hectare piece.

UTM has two campuses. One in the state of Johor with an area of 1148 hectares and the second in Kuala Lumpur with an area of 38 hectares.

Accommodation

UTM Johor has 13 colleges, which can accommodate 17,500 students.Full time students may apply for accommodation on-campus. Each residential college provides:

  • Cafeteria,
  • multipurpose hall,
  • muslim prayer room,
  • tennis courts,
  • internet,
  • convenient store,
  • common room

UTM Kuala Lumpur has one residential college, which provides accommodation for about 2,500 students. The facilities provided in this college are cafeteria, multipurpose hall, muslim prayer room, internet and common room besides other facilities in the students’ rooms.

How is the academic life at this university/college? It's good. I really enjoy the study life. However, in my opinion, as I'm currently doing my internship, students should be learning more of the hands-on job (ie: having practical classes) because that's what going to help them in the future. …
